Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
